Answering the Call: My Journey Back to God

Answering the Call: My Journey Back to God

I remember being in my early 20s, lost in depression and darkness, when God began calling me back to Him. At that time, I was so wrapped up in my struggles that I couldn’t see a way out. But God, in His infinite wisdom, used an unlikely messenger—my six-year-old daughter.

mom please take me to church

“Mama, please take me to church,” she would plead, over and over again. Looking back now, I see how God was using a child’s pure heart to draw me back to Him. It’s overwhelming to think about how much He loves us, how He gently nudges us, even when we are running in the opposite direction.

But my daughter wasn’t the only sign. During this same season, I was part of a job program meant to teach us new skills. There, I met a woman who, every time she saw me, would encourage and minister to me. Though I couldn’t pick her out of a lineup today, her words left a lasting impact on my soul.

Then came the night of the Bible and the astrology book. I was alone in my room, deep in my thoughts, when something supernatural happened—the Bible lit up. It was as if a bright light surrounded it, as if it had risen from the table by itself. Yet, in my foolishness, I glanced at it, then back at the astrology book in my hand. I was so consumed with figuring out my life, my future, and whether my “stars” aligned with a man I was infatuated with. I told myself, I’ll read the Bible later.

I am so grateful God did not strike me down that night. He saw my ignorance, my searching heart, and still pursued me with mercy.

The Audible Voice of God

One day, I was outside smoking a cigarette, waiting for my “man” to come around. My baby was inside the house, and as I stood there looking back and forth between the door and down the street, I suddenly heard a voice—audible, clear, commanding.

“GO TO THE DOOR!”

The voice was right behind me, as if someone was speaking directly into my ear. I turned around quickly, but no one was there. A chill ran down my spine. Slowly, I made my way toward the door, and just as I stepped onto the porch, my son fell.

Because I was there, I caught him before he hit the ground.

That moment still shakes me. If I had ignored that voice… I don’t even want to think about what could have happened.

The Day My Life Changed

One Saturday, my sisters, my kids, and I were out shopping when we saw a group of people wearing matching shirts, passing out tracts. I took the first one politely and stuffed it into my bag without much thought.

But then, as we passed them again, another woman—one I still remember clearly—handed me a different pamphlet. This time, I stopped to read it.

The words leapt off the page.

For a moment, it was as if the world around me disappeared. Just me and the message in my hands. I asked a few questions about the church and its service times. Then, with conviction, I said, I’m going to come.

The Sunday of Salvation

I don’t remember the exact date, but I do know that the weather was warm. I dressed my kids, and we got on the crosstown bus to the church. By the time we arrived, I was very late. Nervously, I asked, Am I too late?

Their response: “No, come on in.”

I stepped inside, and guess what part of the service it was?

Altar call.

It was as if the entire congregation faded away. I didn’t see anyone else—I just felt the pull, the overwhelming presence of God. Without hesitation, I walked to the altar and surrendered my life to Christ.

From that day forward, my life has never been the same. Have I had ups and downs? Absolutely. But God has done a mighty work in me, and I know He is not finished yet.

If God Is Calling You—Answer

If you’ve been having spiritual encounters—whether through dreams, divine signs, or an unshakable feeling—God is calling you. Don’t delay like I did. Don’t get so wrapped up in life’s distractions that you ignore His voice.

I missed the mark many times because I didn’t trust my own inner guidance. I let my circumstances, fears, and confusion cloud my judgment. But one thing I know for sure: God never stopped pursuing me.

And He is pursuing you, too.

If you hear His call—answer quickly.
